Dear Bob,

Here's the info on Chile that I promised you.

I am attaching a few pictures to use or not use as you so desire. These pictures are right in the area where I am going.

Bob what ever assistance your friends can bring will be greatly appreciated. In one of the pictures you see them collecting water. One of the major items we are purchasing is bottled water.

We are still needing about $20,000 US to purchase supplies of water, vitamins, medicine, food supplies (meal bars etc). We are purchasing these in Mendoza Chile and trucking them in to Concepcion, Chile. The trucking will cost about 3 - 5 thousand dollars depending on how many trucks we fill.

These supplies are calculated to be sufficient for about a month for a camp of about 5,000 people displaced by the earthquake. These people lost everything, housing, clothing etc. We have chosen this location as I personally know the people looking after this camp and they are extremely reliable. I know the supplies will all go where they are meant to be used and won't be sold or misused. I will also personally be in Chile for almost 2 weeks making sure things are properly distributed.

A pastor friend of mine in Argentina has his church collecting, blankets, clothing, shoes etc. They are in Spring heading toward winter and it is getting quite cold to be without shelter all night.

Even now, a month after the original quake of 8.8 they are still having very strong after shocks. A friend of mine, there in Concepcion, has said that the aftershocks are still so strong that in some areas it has been too dangerous to even start looking through the rubble for bodies.

My friend and web-maven Irene celebrates her personal new year today. Can't tell you how old she is...I know, but I can't tell you, because I want to live to see my next Personal New Year later this spring.

All to often we forget to pause and ponder the last year in our lives. What did we do, how did we do, who did we share it with? Those kind of questions. It is also a good time to say thanks to those who have been helping over the past year.

In this case, it is my opportunity to say thanks to a delightful friend who has been more than just supportive in my own work as a speaker, writer, leadership and sales trainer. Her help with our various websites has been an inspiration.

Advice from my Web master

One of the things I have told my web design clients is that to get your site talked about and indexed, get out there and get involved online. Post articles, talk in forums, become the expert, and above all, start your own blog. Most of us keep making excuses why we can't do something, but I figure it's time to put my money where my mouth is. (This is from Irene's first blog.)

Web design is a relatively new part of my life. I've been online forever, with my career in science research, it's pretty much always been a part of the way things are done. As I've seen the pages and sites evolve, it got my scientific and creative minds together to discover how much of this I could learn and create for myself and subsequently, for others.

What began as a way to help out my friend Bob fix up his Ideaman site has turned into a part-time business creating new sites like Secret Selling Tips and, most recently, The Prosperous Farmer. I've also helped others, like Jeff with his investigations business, update what is otherwise a really nice site. Each design, each success has taught me something new and I believe that is the most important thing.

Here is an idea on leveraged marketing

I've told you about the work 20 speakers are doing in creating the Alberta Speakers website and ad-venture promotional team. This group is using a website which is supported by print advertising as a way to leverage their reach.

Mid November we expanded that outreach by inviting additional speakers to join us in two more online web-based promotional websites. We've had a good response for Edmonton Speakers and Calgary Speakers websites.

Last week we invited speakers from BC to become a part of a new online program to promote Vancouver Speakers and Kelowna/Okanagon Speakers. Again, the response has been good. Obviously, these ideas have struck a chord with our fellow speakers. Yahoo!

Glad to help where we can and we have several other projects under consideration: Atlantic Canada Speakers, Saskatchewan Speakers, Manitoba Speakers, Ontario Speakers, Toronto Speakers, Hamilton Speakers, and Ottawa Speakers. Interesting way to leverage my spare time, keep my webmaster busy, and leverage my reach along with helping my fellow speakers with theirs.

Denver Secrets revealed

On our recent trip to Denver, CO for the CSIA DemoGala2007 event I had the chance to hear and chat with the new CO Governor, Bill Ritter.

He had made some opening remarks and a couple of major announcements concerning technology in CO. I thought he had done a pretty good job and told him that during our chat when he came to the booth for a photo opp arranged by the Canadian Consulate staff.

We chatted for a couple of minutes. Afterwards, one of the other trade mission team asked me why I told him he had done well. I replied, "because I thought he did!" and I believe in encouraging people when I can.

Drop Zone a success

Imagine standing on the narrow ledge of a 27 story building. Then imagine, taking your life in your hands and stepping off.... scary? Yes...

On Sept. 10th Bob did exactly that when he stepped off the top of the Sutton Place Hotel in support of AB Easter Seals to raise $3200 for his efforts.

A mental challenge... for sure. But a worth cause too.

Bob believes in living life as an adventure and in taking calculated risks in support of worthy goals. This was one of those moments.

Whose idea was this anyway? Walking down the outside of a 26 stroy building

Anyone who raises a minimum pledge of $1500 for the Alberta Easter Seals Drops Zone before Sept. 10th (actually before my training on Sept. 5th) will earn the chance to rappel down the side of the 26-story Sutton Place Hotel (10235 101 St in Edmonton). Since 2005, more than 600 superheros joined this exclusive Superhero Club for Easter Seals.

I am committed to being a part of that courageous group this year in helping Easter Seal Kids. (gulp)

I am asking for your involvement in making that goal a reality. I could donate the $1500 for the chance to walk down the building, but that would defeat the process of engaging and involving a greater number of people in the process. People like you... I believe in the power of making a 'leveraged' difference.

This program is being used by Easter Seals all across Canada. Last year (Edmonton's first) 39 people rappeled down and this year they have a goal of doubling that number. They have room for 70 Superheros. I would love to be one of them this year and with your help, surpass that challenging goal.

I've pledged to raise at least $2500. I am asking your help to surpass this challenging goal.

What's new with the Canadian Idea Man?

It's been busy... so busy in fact that I have neglected my blog. My appologies... I will be setting aside regular time to update this blog so you will know what we've been up to...

Last year I had the opportunity to write most of the copy and work with the creative department of The Brick to create The Brick Way which was published in English and French for all of their employees last summer.

This publication captures the culture and helps educate each team member on the operations of this amazing success story. Each department has committed to 4-6 points in making it easy for their customers to do business.

This publication drew on existing programs and introduced a few new ones, namely "Creating a company of leaders - where each employee is encouraged and actively empowered to take personal responsibility for thier respective role."

It has lead to a focus on The Brick Way in several areas and signage, training, and support being created to reinforce its message... 'It's about all of us!"

Soft skills help MBAs stand out from the crowd: "Business schools are increasingly offering 'soft skills' training in leadership, management and communication to MBA graduates to give them something to differentiate themselves from the competing pack, a leading academic has said.
Schools that emphasise their leadership, communication and general management training alongside the traditional hard financial skills are able to position themselves to attract higher quality candidates, Les Graham, director of the full-time MBA at Durham Business School told Management-Issues.

'What we are hearing is that, both among employers and students, soft skills are becoming a much bigger issue,' he said.

With the quality of much of the core training offered by business schools often hard to tell apart, schools are increasing promoting 'unique selling points', such as Durham's boardroom simulation activity, where students get to experience and work within a 'real' boardroom environment, he added.

Graham's call follows research last week that suggested employers were planning to recruit significantly more MBA graduates this year, in the process quashing fears that the popularity of the qualification had diluted its 'gold standard' reputation. But more MBAs coming on to the jobs' market means MBA graduates are inevitably going to have to work harder to land the most coveted jobs.

The survey by the Graduate Management Admission Council also found that employers are particularly eager to find MBAs who have been exposed to a wide range of soft skills training.
'There is a growing recognition of the importance of leadership and teamwork. Soft skills is one of the biggest issue in terms of employment,' added Graham."

This focus on soft skills training reinforces what many of us in the training field have know for a long time. It is about being able to relate, lead and communicate with people that makes you successful and companies profitable. Sales is a soft skill and yet that is what drives our business engine.

What is driving you and your team?
What is your defined purpose and strategic mission as an organization?
What are you doing to engage and motivate your team to win?
What are you doing to equip yourself and your team to win?

Funny how some non-structured time in the sun with a good book allows your mind to wander and wonder. Amazing how the warmth and sea air can stimulate your imagination and your ability to dream. March is the end of your 1st quarter and a good time to pause and reflect on how you and/or your team are actually doing. Remember those goals you set late last year or early this year? How are you doing?

I found myself rethinking 'what I do' and 'why I do it' on a recent trip to Cancun. I had a wonderful time addressing the dealer/owners of a Canadian National Tire Chain. They were very receptive and open to challenge their own experiences and to revisit 'why' and 'what' they were doing. This, I believe, is the beginning of building strong, long-term foundations for profitable success under any organization. I hope my time with them will lead to additional opportunities to serve them and work with their organization. They are a great team of people!

From personal experience, having a "strongly defined," visual image of your purpose and a strategic mission of what you do will keep you focused. It will also keep you fired up and excited about your business and career. It will help you ride the tough times and challenges that come with everyday life and modern day business.

My challenge for you is to take a minute... ok, 15 minutes, and take a serious look at what you are doing.

Ask yourself,

Why you are doing it?
What real value do you bring to your industry, market, and clients?
What are you willing to change to make it better, more attractive, and value-added to your team and your customers?

"Old-school thinking

I'm still seeing a lot of hesitation amongst old-school marketers to try this. These are the same dinosaurs that are willing to spend tons of money on TV spots and other branding efforts without any honest-to-god results. They're driving with their blinders on, and if they're not careful, they're going to be left behind.

You can't score if you don't play the game. Experiment with different messages and media placements. Give your online creative teams bigger budgets for photography, video, animation and illustration. With the right resources, they may just come up with that stopping experience that gives people a reason to take a detour and invest their time with your brand-- leaving a lasting impression and taking the first step toward increasing sales.

Disciplines and wild rides
I'd like to leave you with three points that I think are crucial to success:

As you test your way into this, be disciplined not only about collecting data, but also about understanding your data.

Commit budget, tools and staff to analyze your findings-- and use that information to refine, refine, refine.

Embrace the different media that are out there. From podcasts to cell phones, there is an unprecedented number of avenues available today to convey your message. Dig deep to see if the medium is right for the message and to gain a clear understanding of how you can leverage each medium to the best possible means.

Keep an eagle-eye on the cost-effectiveness of what you're doing. Stick with your testing, and give it enough time to see if it works. However, if after a sales cycle you see that something isn't working, don't hesitate to put a bullet in its head. It's like I always tell my team-- fail fast, and get 80 percent of it right.

Remembering 9-11

Do you remember where you were on Sept. 11th, 2001?

What were you doing when you heard about the planes striking the World Trade Center in NewYork?

How has that tragic event impacted your life and the way you think and act?

How have you changed and what have you changed as a result of your reflection and reaction to that event?

I toured ground zero in early December of 2001. I was supposed to be speaking in NJ shortly after the terrorist attack and was rescheduled to December. I was overwhelmed by the devistation I saw. The smells and the sights are seared into my memories. I was moved to tears with the posters for missing family members and the poems and wishes from so many who had visited this once towering site.

I also made some changes in my life and my business activities. My family and friends have become even more important to me than ever. I now make sure they are taken care of, before I worry about my business commitments.

I also am working to create additional revenue streams and ways of sharing my expertise on a more local scale. Fall is now upon us and the summer is a softly fading memory. The days are growing shorter, the leaves are turning color and some are shedding already. Now what?

Where do you go from here?

Henry R. Luce who published "Time," "Life" and other magazines once wrote, "Business more than any other occupation is a continual dealing with the future; it is a continual calculation, an instinctive exercise in foresight."

Whether you are an entrepreneur, leading edge manager, or a rising star employee; taking time to consider the future, as you may encounter it, is one of the most important activities in which you invest. Your career is important - why not invest in it now!

Are you happy in your life, career or business? Does it show?

Many of us miss amazing opportunities to bring a little joy into the lives of our customers, and by that ourselves, when we forget why we are in business. I tell my audiences that, "the main purpose of business is to make the lives of our customers better, at a profit."

When we are focused on the challenges of dealing with conflicting demands, customer quirks and the hectic pace in which we live and do business, it is easy to forget. We loose our joy and zeal we had when we first started. This has a downward spiral in making life more difficult and our relationships less satisfying. This spiral can be haulted and turned around.

Our success in business and life is built on relationships. Those relationships are enhanced when we reach out and touch people.

"There is a great paradox in reaching our to touch someone - and that is, the more you reach out to others, the more you will be touched yourself. Joy and happiness in great measure are waiting for us if we will reach just a little further." So writes Joan Rawlusyk

Father's day is a day of...

Today is father's day in North America. Today kids of all ages will be giving handmade cards and presents (older kids and wives will give store bought offerings) and dad's across the country will respond with (forced delight) upon receiving another tie or other such present. Inside they will respond with love for the affection shown by their spouses and kids.

Many of us will spend this father's day in reflection... thinking fondly of the man who loved us, guided us, taught us, disciplined us and modeled by example how we should live... men who are now gone from sight but never from our hearts and minds.

My dad was a wonderful man, an inmperfect man, a man of integrity and love who truly demonstrated his love to me, my sister and our mom. He passed away on his 82 nd birthday on Feb. 11th, 1999 and I still miss him terribly.

It is not just today that he crosses my mind... I think of him on many occassions... and I smile saddly... I miss his funny conversations, his loving touch and hugs... his solid business advice and his love of life and service in the community. Each day I work to continue building my life and business in such a way that he would be proud of me.

If you have a dad, brother, son, cousin, co-worker or other man in your life who has made a difference... tell him today, and tell him often. All to often people die without ever knowing how great they were or the amazing difference they made in our lives.

Ever notice how you often get what you wish for?

Life is funny at times!

More so when you are in business for yourself and have some control over where you invest your time. There are times when you are so busy you really don't know where one project ends and another starts and you wish for some breathing room.

Amazingly enough, you often get that wish. Why? Often it is due to your being too busy working in the business to work on the business.

By working on the business, I mean spending time in strategic planning and development of new service and profit areas.
By working on the business, I mean investing time marketing and promoting what you do to current and prospective clients.
By working on the business, I mean investing time and resources in your own skills development.
By working on the business, I mean investing time in strategic play and creative indulgence. This will energize your mind and your body.

When you are working in the business, your focus is on doing the jobs, engagements, projects that you have commmitted to doing. The result of not investing time to work on the business is the gigantic roller coaster of cash flow and client engagement.

I love to be busy and am at my best when I am working on a variety of projects. This allows me to more fully utilize my energy and creativity. I can switch from one project to another and often this change is an energizer. But I need to remind myself that some of those projects need to be focused on building the business by working on the business.

For example: We've just designed and launched our Ideas@Work! - Strategies for Success e-zine earlier this month and will be sending out our June issue at the end of the month. I'm already working on the July, August and September issues.

My plan is to have at least one issue completed a month in advance at all times. That way, should I find myself too busy or away from the office, I can still send it out on time. I can add breaking news as needed, but the majority of the ezine will be locked and loaded. I am also working ahead and eventually will take part of my 'mini-breaks' as creative writing sessions where I can work on issues as far out as 6 months.

Another area where we have taken some pro-active moves in expanding and working on the business is in the expansion of our websites. We have registered quite a few websites and are busy creating a series of mini-sites that will serve to promote or focus on specific services (eg: www.BusinessSuccessCoach.biz) or specific products (eg: www.couragetolead.info). These mini-sites will start appearing as early as the middle of June.

These mini-sites will also act as portals leading people to our main sites. With more people searching the web for products and professional services it makes dollars and sense to invest in creating opportunities for current and potential clients to find us and find out what we can do for them.

We need to work for a sense of fluidity or balance in our lives, careers and companies. We are never really in balance, but we can work to ensure we are not running full tilt, out of control toward a brick wall or cliff in our futures.

Investing time to work on your life, career or business is the best investment of your time and resources. The pay offs can be tremendous in better use of time, increased energy, enhanced career success, increased productivity and profitability.

Red Deer College 8th Annual Office Admin Conference

What a great Friday I had! Was invited to Red Deer College to do a keynote for a student organized Office Admin conference. What a great group of women...and what a great job they did too!

This is a class project for the 2nd year students and in my opinion, they passed with flying colors.

From a speaker's perspective they made me feel right at home and were very responsive as I shared some ideas during the 100 mins or so on stage.

I was able to encourage them to take risks and to sail out of the protection of their 'safe habor' as they finish their program and tackle building their new careers.

I shared the story of my Hawaii to Kobe, Japan story with the typhoon encounter as the background for my remarks.

The nice thing about this event was being able to actually stay around and talk with some of the audience members instead of having to rush off to another plane or drive to the next engagement. This was a luxury I do not enjoy too often and it was fun. Nice to hear the remarks and answer questions in person.

To the organizing class of Red Deer College's Office Admin program...my thanks for a wonderful day....YOU DID GREAT!

Goodbye Ron...

We said goodbye to my friend and neighbor Ron yesterday morning.

Ron passed away suddenly on the 19th of a massive corornary. According to the ME he most likely was gone before he hit the floor. He left behind his 92 year old father who is also my neighbor out here in the wilds of Alberta, two sons, an older brother and two nephews and a neice....and of course a whole passel of friends, including myself, who have been impacted by his friendship and investment in our lives.

I had the privilege of being allowed to say a few words in reflection of his life. I spoke briefly about the legacy he left and how I thought it was revealed in his relationships in his various roles in life...son, father, uncle, boss, employee, friend etc. I spoke about what I thought were his three major legacies... laughter, love and learning.

Ron loved to laugh and to share jokes and moments of mirth with all of us.... when we went for coffee (frequently each week) he would be the one who kept the conversation going and quite often it would be sprinkled with laughter...often started or punctuated by his...

Ron loved his life, his father, his sons and was very generous in sharing his passion with the rest of us....I will miss his energetic engagements... he was never afraid to challenge you and make you think... and he did not suffer fools gladly as the saying went.

Ron loved to learn and to share that learning with others. In his former role at CN part of what he did was teach mechanics how to be better ones. Ron was always open to share his knowledge...when I would visit him in the garage we built (family and friends) a couple of years ago...he always had time to explain to me what he was working on and how it worked or needed to be fixed.

In short, Ron was a generous man, who gave of himself. He was a man who liked to build, to fix things and to make them better. I believe he had that affect on people too...he did with me. His investment and friendship in my life has helped make me a better person, a better speaker and perhaps even a better writer as well.

Ron...I will miss you...but I will not forget you.

Am starting to use this new tool now, so look for more frequent postings as I learn how to leverage myself and my skills with it.

It has been a busy year already... did a public program on presentation skills Jan 14th and then left for a two week break...had the opportunity to visit friends in Vancouver, Bellingham, Las Vegas and Phoenix and attend a 3 day business building workshop in Scottsdale enroute.

Am focused this year on increasing the passive income side of my businesses....so buy a book...smile

Just got back from Washington, DC a week or so back... was speaking in Bethesda, MD on the 10th.

Actually played tourist.... saw the White House, Smithsonian, and Ford Theatre... and took some pictures with my new camera phone... so will be able to share some of them with you along the way now.
